1. Indiana University was founded on October 1, 1820. The school started with just one building and ten students, but quickly grew to become one of the largest universities in the United States.

2. On October 1, 1858, the first train to cross the Wabash Bridge in Vincennes, Indiana arrived. This event marked the completion of a major transportation project and greatly improved travel and commerce in the state.

3. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened its gates for the first time on October 1, 1909. The speedway is the largest sporting facility in the world and hosts several major racing events throughout the year, including the famous Indianapolis 500.

4. On October 1, 1933, legendary basketball coach Bob Knight was born in Massillon, Ohio. Knight went on to coach at Indiana University from 1971 to 2000, winning three NCAA championships and finishing his career as one of the winningest coaches in college basketball history.

5. The Indiana Pacers played their first NBA game on October 1, 1976, against the San Antonio Spurs. The Pacers have since become one of the most successful franchises in the league, winning three conference championships and making it to the NBA Finals once.
