1. The first public university in Oregon, the University of Oregon, was established on October 1, 1876. Founded in Eugene, the university is one of the oldest public universities on the west coast.

2. On October 1, 1912, the Timberline Lodge located on the south side of Mount Hood in Oregon was opened. The construction of the lodge was part of a public works project during the Great Depression and is considered one of the most iconic historic buildings in the state.

3. The first ever Portland Trail Blazers basketball game was played on October 1, 1970, against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Trail Blazers went on to win the game by a score of 115-112.

4. On October 1, 1987, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) was opened in Portland. The museum is home to over 200 interactive exhibits and is a popular destination for families with children.

5. The State of Oregon officially recognized October 1 as "Oregon State Flag Day" in 2013. The state flag, which features a beaver on its reverse side, was adopted in 1925 and is one of the few state flags in the United States that features a two-sided design.
