1. In 1958, the first meeting of the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys was held in Raleigh. This organization is dedicated to promoting the interests of defense attorneys and improving the quality of legal representation for those accused of crimes in North Carolina.

2. In 1970, the Cape Hatteras National Seashore was established, encompassing more than 70 miles of coastline along North Carolina's Outer Banks. This protected area includes some of the state's most famous beaches, as well as important ecological habitats and cultural landmarks.

3. In 1987, Hurricane Floyd made landfall in southeastern North Carolina, causing massive flooding and widespread damage across the region. The storm remains one of the most destructive in state history, with total losses estimated at $6 billion.

4. In 2006, North Carolina became the first state in the nation to pass a law requiring all new drivers under the age of 18 to complete a graduated driver's license program. This initiative was designed to improve safety on the state's roads and reduce the number of accidents involving teen drivers.

5. In 2013, the Charlotte Bobcats (now the Charlotte Hornets) played their first preseason game under their new team name and color scheme. The rebranding was part of an effort to restore the team's connection to the city of Charlotte and its basketball history, after a controversial name change to the "Bobcats" in the early 2000s.
