1. In 1816, the first post office in Michigan was established in Detroit. This helped to facilitate communication and commerce throughout the region.

4. In 1915, the Detroit Tigers won their first World Series championship. Led by legendary player-manager Ty Cobb, the Tigers defeated the Philadelphia Phillies four games to one in a fiercely contested series.

5. In 1984, United Airlines Flight 629 crashed shortly after takeoff from Stapleton Airport in Denver. Among the 44 people killed in the tragedy were 10 residents of Michigan who were returning home after a hunting trip. This event remains one of the deadliest aviation disasters in US history.
