1. In 1779, The Battle of Savannah was fought during the American Revolutionary War. American and French forces attempted to take the British-held city, but ultimately failed.

2. In 1863, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard ordered the evacuation of Charleston, South Carolina, as Union forces approached during the Civil War. The subsequent occupation of the city by Union troops would last until 1865.

3. In 1947, Jack Dempsey, former heavyweight boxing champion of the world, opened a restaurant in Columbia, South Carolina. The establishment, located on Main Street, was named "Dempsey's Grill."

4. In 1987, Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Charleston, causing significant damage and flooding in the area. The storm caused over $150 million in damage and resulted in 5 deaths.

5. In 2002, the United States submarine USS Clamagore was decommissioned and turned into a museum in Charleston. The submarine had served during the Cold War and was now open for public tours.
