1. In 1778, British explorer Captain James Cook became the first recorded European to visit the Hawaiian Islands. He arrived in Waimea Bay on the island of Kauai on October 17th.

5. On October 17, 2018, Honolulu joined a growing list of cities in the US to ban single-use plastic bags. The ban went into effect on January 1, 2020 and aims to reduce litter and protect marine life.
