1. In 1777, the Battle of Saratoga took place in New York during the American Revolutionary War. Although Louisiana was not directly involved in the battle, it was an important turning point in the war and contributed to the eventual victory of the American colonies over the British.

2. In 1868, the Louisiana State Lottery Company was chartered by the state legislature. The lottery became a major source of revenue for the state, but was eventually outlawed due to allegations of fraud and corruption.

3. In 1910, a major hurricane made landfall near the mouth of the Mississippi River, causing widespread damage and loss of life along the Gulf Coast. The storm, which is now known as the Great Hurricane of 1910, remains one of the deadliest and most destructive hurricanes in Louisiana history.

4. In 1967, the New Orleans Saints played their first-ever game as a professional football team. Although they lost to the Los Angeles Rams, the Saints would go on to become a beloved and highly successful franchise in the NFL.

5. In 2019, Louisiana elected its first-ever African American governor, John Bel Edwards. Edwards, a Democrat, won a hard-fought campaign against Republican businessman Eddie Rispone, and has since implemented a number of progressive policies and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Louisiana residents.
