1. In 1864, the Battle of Cedar Creek took place in Virginia during the Civil War. Colorado's 1st and 3rd Cavalry Regiments played a significant role in Union General Sheridan's victory over Confederate General Jubal Early's army. Many Colorado soldiers were killed or wounded in the battle, but their bravery and sacrifices helped turn the tide of the war in favor of the Union.

2. In 1912, the eighth annual convention of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution was held in Denver. The event brought together thousands of women from across the country who were descended from the patriots who fought for American independence. The convention featured speeches, patriotic music, parades, and other festivities.

3. In 1957, the Denver Nuggets played their first game as a member of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The Nuggets (originally known as the Denver Rockets) were one of the founding teams of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967, and they played in that league until the NBA merged with the ABA in 1976. The Nuggets have enjoyed occasional success throughout their history, including a trip to the NBA Finals in 1976.

4. In 1977, the Winter Park Express began service between Denver's Union Station and the Winter Park ski resort in Grand County. The train was a popular way for skiers and snowboarders to travel to and from the mountains, and it continued to operate until 2009. In 2017, the Winter Park Express was revived and now runs seasonally from January to March.

5. In 2012, the Aurora theater shooting trial began in Arapahoe County. James Holmes had killed 12 people and injured 70 others at a midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises on July 20, 2012. The trial lasted several months and resulted in Holmes being convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The shooting was one of the deadliest in U.S. history and had a significant impact on the Aurora community and the nation as a whole.
