1. In 1909, Albin Polasek, a Czech-American sculptor, came to Florida and later settled in Winter Park where he created many of his famous sculptures. The Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens now houses his works.
2. In 1944, during World War II, the USS Permit (SS-178) was commissioned at the Naval Submarine Base in New London, Connecticut. The Permit was a Porpoise-class submarine that later saw action in the Pacific theatre.
3. In 1977, convicted murderer Joseph A. Green was executed by electric chair at Florida State Prison in Raiford. He famously shouted "kiss my ass" to witnesses as he was being executed.
4. In 1987, the Miami Dolphins retired the jersey of legendary quarterback Dan Marino in a ceremony at Joe Robbie Stadium (now Hard Rock Stadium). Marino played 17 seasons with the Dolphins and holds many records, including most career passing yards.
5. In 2016, Hurricane Matthew made landfall in Florida, causing widespread damage and power outages. The Category 3 storm affected much of the east coast of Florida before moving up the eastern seaboard of the United States.
