1. In 1864, the town of Deadwood was founded in the Black Hills of western South Dakota. It quickly became a booming mining town and home to infamous figures like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.
2. In 1929, the South Dakota State Capitol building was dedicated in Pierre. The grand neoclassical building features a towering dome and intricate artwork throughout.
3. In 1973, the Wounded Knee incident began on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. A group of Oglala Lakota and members of the American Indian Movement occupied the town of Wounded Knee for 71 days in protest of federal policies towards Native Americans.
4. In 1999, Mount Rushmore received a new addition with the unveiling of the "American Eagle" sculpture. The carving, located to the right of the presidential faces, depicts an eagle in flight.
5. In 2013, the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills received a major donation of $7 million towards the completion of the massive sculpture. When finished, the monument will depict Lakota warrior Crazy Horse on horseback, standing at 641 feet tall.
