1. In 1864, Nevada became the 36th state in the United States. The state was admitted to the union during the Civil War as a way to increase support for the Union Army.

2. In 1942, the Nevada State Prison in Carson City experienced a major riot. The riot began when a group of inmates refused to be searched for contraband, and it soon spiraled out of control. The prison was badly damaged, and several inmates were killed in the violence.
