2. In 1813, the United States Navy launched the USS Constitution, a wooden frigate that would go on to earn the nickname "Old Ironsides" for its sturdy construction and impressive record in battle. The ship was built in Boston, but many New Hampshire residents played a role in its construction and maintenance over the years.

3. In 1861, New Hampshire became the first state to organize and send troops to Washington D.C. in response to President Lincoln's call for volunteers to suppress the Confederate rebellion. The state's soldiers went on to participate in some of the most significant battles of the Civil War, including Gettysburg and Antietam.

4. In 1941, the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods hosted a conference of international leaders to discuss post-war economic reconstruction. The resulting Bretton Woods Agreement established the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, and set the framework for international trade and finance for decades to come.

5. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy battered the New Hampshire coast, causing widespread flooding and power outages. Although much of the damage was not as severe as in other parts of the Northeast, the storm served as a reminder of the state's vulnerability to natural disasters and the importance of emergency preparedness.
