1. On October 29, 1765, the Stamp Act Congress convened in New York City, but the ripple effect of this historic event was felt throughout the 13 American colonies, including South Carolina. The Stamp Act, which was passed by the British Parliament, required all legal documents, newspapers, and commercial contracts to bear a tax stamp to prove payment of taxes to Britain. This act was met with outrage by the colonists, who ultimately led to its repeal.

2. On October 29, 1812, Andrew Pickens Jr., the son of the Revolutionary War hero and South Carolina militia leader General Andrew Pickens, commanded several regiments of the South Carolina State militia during the Battle of Talladega in Alabama. The militia, along with the U.S. Army, engaged in battle with Creeks and Red Stick forces during the Creek War.

3. In 1983, on October 29, the H.L. Hunley, the world's first combat submarine, was raised from its resting place in Charleston Harbor. Lost at sea during the Civil War, the Hunley was discovered and recovered by a team of archaeologists and historians in the early 2000s. It is now on display at the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in North Charleston, South Carolina.

4. On October 29, 1913, Morgana Bullard, a South Carolina suffragette, was arrested for picketing outside the White House in Washington, D.C. She joined the ranks of thousands of other women who protested for the right to vote, which was ultimately passed in the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920.

On October 29, 2000, the Confederate flag flying atop the South Carolina State House was removed following years of protests from civil rights groups and other concerned citizens who saw it as a symbol of racism and oppression.
