1. In 1872, the first ever State Fair was held in Nebraska on October 3. Thousands of people gathered to celebrate the state's agriculture, industry and culture.

2. On October 3, 1892, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's football team played their first game against Doane College. The Cornhuskers won the game 10-0, beginning a long and storied history of Nebraska football.

3. On October 3, 1908, the Lincoln High School football team defeated the Omaha High School team by a score of 119-0. This remains one of the biggest blowouts in high school football history.

4. In 1967, the Nebraska State Capitol Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Located in Lincoln, the building was completed in 1932 and is a symbol of the state's governance and democracy.

5. October 3, 1974 marks the day that William H. Thompson became the first African American judge in the state of Nebraska. His appointment to the Lancaster County District Court helped pave the way for more diversity within the state's judiciary system.
