1. In 1813, the first steamboat to navigate the Arkansas River, the New Orleans, arrived in Arkansas Post.

2. In 1836, the town of Little Rock officially became the capital of Arkansas.

3. On October 5, 1881, Tom Horn, a notorious outlaw and hired killer, was born in Scotland County, Missouri. He would go on to become one of the most feared lawmen in the Wild West.

4. In 1957, the Little Rock Nine, a group of African American students, were escorted by the U.S. Army to attend classes at Little Rock Central High School after Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus had attempted to block their entrance.

5. In 1989, the Arkansas Razorbacks defeated the Texas Longhorns 27-24 in a college football game that would become known as the "Big Shootout." The game is considered one of the greatest in college football history and helped secure the Razorbacks' national championship.
