3. In 1918, the Spanish flu pandemic reached Philadelphia, causing a surge in cases and deaths. Within six months, over 12,000 people in the city had died from the disease.

4. In 1963, the Pennsylvania Turnpike became the first highway in the world to implement an electronic toll collection system. The system used transponders mounted on cars to automatically deduct tolls from a driver's account.

5. In 1982, the first U.S. commercial nuclear reactor accident occurred at the Three Mile Island plant in Middletown, Pennsylvania. The accident was caused by a combination of technical and human errors and resulted in the release of radiation into the environment.
