2. On October 5, 1880, the town of Huron was officially incorporated. It is now the county seat of Beadle County and home to the South Dakota State Fair.

3. In 1968, the Crazy Horse Memorial in the Black Hills officially began construction. It is a massive monument that honors the Lakota leader Crazy Horse and is still a work in progress today.

4. South Dakota State University was founded on October 5, 1881, as Dakota Agricultural College. It is now a leading research university and home to more than 12,000 students.

5. In 1951, Chuck Yeager, the first person to break the sound barrier in flight, visited Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City. His historic flight took place just four years earlier, in 1947.
