1. In 1862, General Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee won the Battle of Perryville, the largest Civil War battle fought in Kentucky. The Confederate victory put a stop to the Union Army's advance into Tennessee.
2. On October 8, 1910, the Chattanooga Lookouts baseball team played the last game of their season. Legendary outfielder Shoeless Joe Jackson, who was then a member of the Lookouts, played in the game. Jackson would go on to play for the Chicago White Sox and become one of the greatest hitters in baseball history.
3. In 1982, the First Tennessee Plaza building opened in Nashville. At 452 feet tall, it was the tallest building in Tennessee until 2010.
4. On October 8, 1890, the University of Tennessee was founded in Knoxville. The first classes were held in 1794, but the school was not officially recognized as a university until 1890.
5. In 1997, a tape of Nashville country singer Garth Brooks' performance at New York City's Central Park was released as a live album. The album sold over 12 million copies and earned Brooks a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records as the best-selling live album artist of all time.
