1. In 1935, the first commercial flight from the mainland United States to Hawaii landed on September 1st. The flight was operated by Pan American Airways and arrived at Honolulu International Airport after a 21 hour journey from California.

2. On September 1, 1997, Princess Diana visited Hawaii with her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. She attended a charity reception and dinner hosted by the Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki, which raised funds for cancer research.

3. In 1923, on September 1st, the Honolulu Zoo officially opened to the public. It is the only zoo in the United States that originated as a grant from a sovereign monarch - King David Kalakaua.

4. September 1, 1941 marked the beginning of the U.S. Army's construction of the Mamala Bay Golf Course in Honolulu. The course was originally built for military personnel stationed in Hawaii during World War II and today is open to the public.

5. On September 1, 2009, Honolulu's historic streetcars returned to service on a new line that connected the downtown area with Waikiki. These streetcars were originally used in Melbourne, Australia and were refurbished before being brought to Hawaii.
