4. On September 1, 1979, the first Southern 500 stock car race was held at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina. The race has since become a beloved annual event, attracting thousands of racing fans to the state each year.

In 1985, a man named Larry Walters attached 45 helium-filled weather balloons to a lawn chair and soared over the foothills of San Bernardino County, California, reaching heights of 15,000 feet before eventually landing safely. Although Walters was not a South Carolina native, he had ties to the region and his unique feat of human flight remains a favorite topic of conversation amongst South Carolinians to this day.
