1. On September 1, 1863, Union troops under the command of General William W. Averell defeated Confederate forces at the Battle of White Sulphur Springs. This victory helped secure control of the area for the Union and helped pave the way for West Virginia statehood.

2. The town of Buckhannon, West Virginia, was incorporated on September 1, 1852. Located in the north-central part of the state, Buckhannon is home to West Virginia Wesleyan College, a private liberal arts school.

3. On September 1, 1915, Governor Henry D. Hatfield signed into law the first statewide prohibition law in West Virginia, banning the sale and consumption of alcohol. The law was in effect for just over two years before being repealed in 1917.

4. In 1972, the West Virginia State Police established a new "Flying Squad" unit, known as "Troop Zero." The unit was given the task of responding quickly to any emergency situations that may arise throughout the state. Today, the unit is still in operation and provides valuable assistance to other law enforcement agencies.

5. September 1, 1998 saw the opening of the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, a museum and educational facility dedicated to the history of coal mining in West Virginia. Visitors can take a tour of the underground mine, learn about the industry's past and present, and explore a variety of exhibits and artifacts related to coal mining.
