1. Florida was home to several of the 9/11 terrorists. Mohamed Atta, the leader of the group, lived in Hollywood, Florida, and several of the other hijackers trained and prepared for the attacks in the state.

2. Two of the planes used in the attacks departed from airports in Florida. American Airlines Flight 11, which ultimately struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, took off from Logan International Airport in Boston but made a stop at Los Angeles International Airport after departing from Miami International Airport. United Airlines Flight 175, which hit the South Tower, also departed from Logan and stopped at Logan before taking off from Boston.

3. Several Floridians were among the victims of the attacks. These included members of the crew aboard the planes, as well as people who worked in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

4. In the aftermath of the attacks, Florida played a key role in the investigation and surveillance efforts. The state became a hub for counterterrorism operations, and many suspects were apprehended or monitored in the state. The FBI also set up a command center in Tampa to coordinate its efforts.

5. In the years since the attacks, the state has taken steps to commemorate the victims and honor those who responded to the tragedy. The names of the Florida victims are inscribed on a memorial in Tampa, and the city of Palm Beach Gardens has constructed a memorial garden to honor the heroes of Flight 93, who fought back against the hijackers and prevented the plane from reaching its intended target.
