1. On September 14, 1847, the Oregon Provisional Government was formed. This government was established by American settlers in the Oregon Territory, which was jointly controlled by the United States and Great Britain at the time. The Provisional Government laid the foundation for the eventual statehood of Oregon.

2. In 1927, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival held its first performance in Ashland. The festival has since become one of the most renowned cultural events in the Pacific Northwest, attracting visitors from around the world.

3. On September 14, 1953, the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River was dedicated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The dam, which spans the river between Oregon and Washington, provides hydroelectric power, flood control, irrigation, and navigation benefits.

4. In 1970, a group of Native American activists occupied the abandoned prison on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. Among those participating in the occupation were members of Oregon tribes, including the Klamath and Warm Springs. The occupation lasted for more than a year and drew attention to Native American rights and sovereignty issues.

5. On September 14, 1997, Oregonian Bill Bowerman was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. Bowerman was a legendary track coach at the University of Oregon, where he trained numerous Olympic medalists, including Steve Prefontaine. Bowerman was also the co-founder of Nike, Inc.
