1. Vermont officially became the 14th state on September 21, 1791. After a long struggle for independence from New York and years of negotiation over boundaries and concessions, Vermont was finally granted statehood.

2. On September 21, 1938, one of the worst natural disasters in Vermont's history occurred. The New England Hurricane, also known as the Great Hurricane of 1938, caused widespread flooding and destruction throughout the state. Over 200 people lost their lives, and many communities were left devastated.

3. The University of Vermont, the oldest university in the state, was founded on September 21, 1791, the same day that Vermont became a state. Originally established as a private college, UVM has grown into a nationally recognized research institution with over 12,000 students.

4. In September 1946, Burlington's first public television station, WETK-TV, began broadcasting. Today, the station is known as Vermont PBS and provides educational and informative programming to viewers throughout the state.

5. September 21 is also recognized as Vermont Farm to School Day, a celebration of the state's commitment to promoting healthy foods and supporting local agriculture. Since 2003, the Vermont Farm to School Network has worked to connect schools with local farms and food producers, providing students with fresh and nutritious meals while supporting the state's agricultural economy.
