1. The Battle of Hillsborough occurred on September 22, 1780, during the American Revolutionary War. British troops, under the command of General Charles Cornwallis, launched a surprise attack on Patriot forces under the leadership of North Carolina Governor Thomas Burke. The Patriots were able to hold off the British long enough for reinforcements to arrive, and the battle ultimately ended in a stalemate.

2. On September 22, 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg launched an attack on Union troops near Sharpsburg, Maryland. The resulting Battle of Antietam was one of the bloodiest single-day battles in American history, with over 22,000 casualties. Although the Union was ultimately able to repel the Confederate attack, the battle had little strategic significance and the war continued for several more years.

3. The North Carolina State Fair, which attracts over 1 million visitors each year, typically begins on the second Thursday of October. However, in 2016, the opening day of the fair was moved to September 22 due to Hurricane Matthew, which caused flooding and displacement throughout the state. The fairgrounds served as a staging area for relief efforts, and many of the traditional fair events were scaled back or cancelled.

4. On September 22, 1934, the first unit of the Blue Ridge Parkway was dedicated in North Carolina. The scenic highway, which stretches nearly 500 miles through the Appalachian Mountains, was designed to provide a connecting road between Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Shenandoah National Park. Construction of the parkway began in 1935 and was completed in 1987.

5. In 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, leaving much of the island without power, water, or communication. On September 22 of that year, a delegation of North Carolina politicians, including Governor Roy Cooper and Senator Richard Burr, visited the island to survey the damage and offer the state's assistance in recovery efforts. Many residents of North Carolina have strong ties to Puerto Rico, and the state has been a leader in providing aid and support to those affected by the hurricane.
