2. On September 24, 1864, Montana's first official territorial governor, Sidney Edgerton, arrived in the territory. He served as governor for a year before being appointed Chief Justice of the Montana Supreme Court.

3. In 1944, the Colstrip dam on the Yellowstone River was dedicated. It is one of the first major hydroelectric dams to be built in Montana and provides power and irrigation water for the region.

4. On September 24, 1970, the Environmental Defense Fund filed a lawsuit to stop the construction of a proposed coal-fired power plant near Colstrip. This was one of the first major environmental lawsuits in Montana history.

5. In 1986, Montana's first woman Attorney General, Marc Racicot, was sworn into office on September 24. Racicot went on to serve as Governor of Montana from 1993 to 2001 before becoming Chair of the Republican National Committee.
