1. In 1821, Florida officially became a territory of the United States. This happened as a result of the Adams-Onís Treaty between the United States and Spain, which ceded Florida to the US.

2. In 1888, Hurricane San Felipe II struck South Florida, causing extensive damage and resulting in at least 300 deaths. The hurricane remains one of the most destructive storms to hit Florida.

3. In 1928, the Florida State Board of Health ordered the quarantine of Miami in response to an outbreak of yellow fever. The quarantine lasted for four days before the outbreak was contained.

4. In 1954, Hurricane Hazel struck the Florida Panhandle, causing widespread damage and resulting in 15 deaths. The hurricane also caused flooding along the St. Johns River and in the Everglades.

5. In 2003, the first regular season game of the NBA's Miami Heat was played at the American Airlines Arena in Miami. The Heat defeated the Orlando Magic 92-74 in front of a sold-out crowd.
