1. In 1913, the Naval Academy at Annapolis opened its new football stadium, which would later be renamed Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The first game played there was against the Army Black Knights, and the stadium has since hosted numerous important sporting events.

2. On September 29, 1932, a severe hurricane struck the Chesapeake Bay region, causing widespread damage and flooding. The storm was one of the deadliest and costliest in Maryland history, and its effects were felt for many years afterward.

3. In 1954, the first nuclear power plant in the world to generate commercial electricity began operation in Maryland. The plant, located at Shippingport, was a joint project between the federal government and private industry.

4. On September 29, 1982, a fire erupted in the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant in Lusby, MD. The blaze caused significant damage but was quickly contained and no injuries were reported.

5. In 2006, Maryland's first female governor, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, lost her re-election bid to Republican Robert Ehrlich. Townsend had previously served as the state's lieutenant governor and was a well-known political figure in Maryland.
