1. On September 29, 1898, the University of Oregon was founded in Eugene. It was originally known as "Eugene Divinity School" and later changed its name to "University of Oregon" in 1921.
2. On September 29, 1908, the Tillamook Burn started. It was a series of forest fires that lasted for several years and burned more than 350,000 acres of forestland in Oregon.
3. On September 29, 1978, Oregon's first MAX Light Rail line began operating in Portland. The line was 15 miles long and had 26 stations.
4. On September 29, 1985, Mount Hood erupted, sending a huge plume of ash and steam into the sky. It was the first eruption of Mount Hood since 1907 and caused some damage to nearby buildings and roads.
5. On September 29, 1993, the Oregon State Capitol building was damaged by a fire. The fire caused $25 million of damage to the building, but no one was injured. The building was later restored and reopened in 1998.
