1. On September 7, 1927, Hoosier composer Cole Porter premiered his Broadway musical "Paris." The show was a critical and commercial success and cemented Porter's place as one of America's greatest songwriters.

2. In 1818, Indiana's first governor, Jonathan Jennings, was inaugurated in the capital city of Corydon. Jennings played a pivotal role in shaping the state's early government and was instrumental in securing Indiana's admission to the Union in 1816.

3. On September 7, 1943, the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine while returning from a secret mission to deliver components for the atomic bomb. Of the ship's 1,196 crew members, only 316 survived. The tragedy remains one of the worst disasters in US naval history.

4. In 1905, the Indiana State Fair moved from Indianapolis to a new location in the town of Fort Wayne. The move was widely celebrated by residents of northeastern Indiana and helped establish Fort Wayne as a major regional center for agriculture and industry.

5. On September 7, 1967, the town of Westfield was incorporated in Hamilton County. Today, Westfield is one of the fastest-growing cities in Indiana and is home to a number of major employers, including Roche Diagnostics and the Grand Park sports complex.
