1) On August 30, 1916, the Oregon Coast Highway was officially dedicated. The highway, now known as US Route 101, runs along the entire coastline of Oregon and is a popular tourist destination.

2) In 1851, the Rogue River Wars began in southern Oregon. The conflict between Native American tribes and white settlers lasted until 1856 and resulted in the forced relocation of many Native Americans to reservations.

3) Oregon State University was founded on August 30, 1868, as the Corvallis College. The school is now one of the largest universities in the Pacific Northwest and a leading research institution.

4) On August 30, 1980, Mount St. Helens in southwest Washington erupted, spewing ash and debris across much of Oregon. The eruption caused widespread damage and loss of life and is still considered one of the most destructive volcanic events in US history.

5) The Oregon State Fair, one of the oldest and largest state fairs in the country, typically begins on or around August 30 each year. The fair features carnival rides, live music, and agricultural exhibits, and is a popular end-of-summer tradition for many Oregonians.
