1. In 1865, Delaware officially abolished slavery, becoming the last state to do so. This abolition was accomplished through the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

2. In 1938, the first commercial flight from the United States to Europe departed from Wilmington Airport in Delaware. The flight was operated by Pan American World Airways and traveled to Lisbon, Portugal.

3. On February 17, 1967, the DuPont Company announced plans to build a new headquarters building in downtown Wilmington. The building, which was completed in 1969, became known as the DuPont Building and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

4. In 2003, Delaware became the first state in the country to allow same-sex couples to enter into civil unions. This was accomplished through the passage of a law that provided many of the same legal rights and protections as marriage.

5. On February 17, 2006, a fierce nor'easter brought heavy snow and rain to Delaware, causing widespread power outages and flooding. The storm also resulted in significant damage to the state's beaches and coastline, particularly in the areas of Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach.
