1. On January 13, 1825, Governor James B. Ray signed a legislative act that created the Marion County Seminary, which later became known as Indiana Central University and is now known as the University of Indianapolis. The seminary was the first institution of higher learning in the state and was originally intended to train ministers.

2. On January 13, 1865, the 30th Indiana Infantry Regiment was mustered out of service after serving in the Union Army during the Civil War. The regiment participated in many major battles, including the Battle of Shiloh and the Siege of Vicksburg.

3. On January 13, 1930, the Indiana General Assembly approved the construction of the Indiana State Teachers College (now known as Indiana State University) in Terre Haute. The school was originally established to train teachers for the state's public schools.

4. On January 13, 1957, Indianapolis Colts owner Carroll Rosenbloom announced that the team would be moving from Baltimore to Indianapolis. The Colts played their first game in Indianapolis in 1984 and won Super Bowl XLI in 2007.

On January 13, 1982, Indiana Governor Robert Orr signed a proclamation declaring January 13 as "Ernie Pyle Day" in honor of the famous Hoosier journalist who was killed while covering World War II. Pyle won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting and is remembered as one of the greatest war correspondents in American history.
