1. In 1846, a group of Texans under the command of General Zachary Taylor defeated Mexican forces at the Battle of Palo Alto. This battle marked the beginning of the Mexican-American War, which ended in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

2. On June 29, 1956, Houston native Richard “Racehorse” Haynes successfully defended Dr. John Hill in a murder trial that captivated the nation. Hill was accused of killing his wife, but Haynes argued that the real killer was a hired hitman hired by a rival doctor. Despite the media frenzy surrounding the trial, Haynes managed to secure an acquittal for his client.

3. On this day in 1987, a tornado outbreak devastated parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, causing an estimated $1.2 billion in damage and claiming the lives of 21 people. The largest of the tornadoes was an F4 twister that tore through the town of Lancaster, destroying over 300 homes and damaging many others.

4. In 2007, the Texas Rangers defeated the Oakland Athletics by a score of 17-6. This game set a record for the most home runs hit in a Major League Baseball game, with a total of ten long balls leaving the park. Rangers rookie Travis Metcalf hit two of the homers, while Athletics outfielder Jack Cust hit three.

5. June 29 is also known as National Waffle Iron Day. Waffles have been enjoyed by Texans for centuries, with early settlers often making them by cooking batter over open flames using a “waffle iron” made of two metal plates hinged together.
