1. On March 11, 1854, the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) was founded in Baltimore as the Maryland Institute for the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts. It is now known as one of the top art schools in the nation.

2. In 1861, on March 11, Baltimore Mayor George William Brown was arrested by Union troops for suspected secessionist sympathies. This event escalated tensions between Baltimore and the Union during the Civil War.

3. On March 11, 1876, the first African American to graduate from the United States Naval Academy, Wesley Brown, was born in Baltimore. He went on to serve in the Navy for over 20 years.

4. March 11, 1974, marked the opening of Baltimore's famous Inner Harbor redevelopment project. The project transformed the previously neglected waterfront area into a thriving commercial and cultural hub for the city.

5. In 1997, on March 11, Maryland became the first state in the nation to establish a statewide 911 emergency communications system. The system has since been adopted by every state in the country.
