1. On March 8, 1670, the first English settlers arrived at Albemarle Point in present-day Charleston, South Carolina. Led by Governor William Sayle, the group established the first permanent English colony in the region.

2. On March 8, 1855, the South Carolina Medical Association was founded in Charleston. Today, the organization is known as the South Carolina Medical Association and represents more than 6,000 physicians and medical students in the state.

3. On March 8, 1873, the first issue of the Charleston News and Courier was published. The newspaper, which is still in circulation today as part of the Post and Courier, has a rich history and has won numerous awards for its reporting.

4. On March 8, 1932, the South Carolina State Highway Department was established. The department was responsible for the construction and maintenance of the state's highways and bridges until it was absorbed by the South Carolina Department of Transportation in 1977.

5. On March 8, 1990, the University of South Carolina became the first university in the state to implement a non-smoking policy. The policy banned smoking in all university buildings and on all university grounds, and was seen as a major step forward in promoting health and wellness on college campuses.
