1. On March 7, 1776, South Carolina's colonial government established the state's first public library in Charles Town (now Charleston). The library, known as the Charleston Library Society, still exists today as one of the oldest cultural institutions in the United States.

2. On March 7, 1862, the ironclad warship CSS Virginia attacked the Federal blockade in Hampton Roads, Virginia during the American Civil War. The Virginia was built in Norfolk, Virginia and commissioned by the Confederate Navy. Despite its initial success against the Union Navy, the Virginia was eventually destroyed by her own crew to prevent her capture.

3. On March 7, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call in Charleston, South Carolina. Bell was in Boston, Massachusetts at the time and spoke to his assistant, Thomas Watson, who was in Charleston. The call was made possible by a 50-mile long wire connecting the two cities.

4. On March 7, 1915, the first game in the history of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) baseball tournament was played in Atlanta, Georgia. The SIAA was one of the oldest and most prestigious college athletic conferences in the United States and included many universities from the South, including the University of South Carolina.

5. On March 7, 1965, civil rights demonstrators led by Martin Luther King Jr. attempted to march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama in protest of the unequal treatment of African Americans in voting. The march, known as Bloody Sunday, was met with violence from Alabama state troopers and local police. The events in Selma helped raise awareness of the Civil Rights Movement and led to the eventual passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
