1. On May 27, 1770, Juan Ponce de León II was appointed the first Spanish governor of East Florida. He served in this position for 10 years, overseeing the areas of St. Augustine, Florida and Pensacola, Florida.

2. On May 27, 1821, the United States took control of Florida from Spain. The Treaty of Madrid officially transferred ownership of the territory to the United States, ending Spain's 300-year rule over Florida.

3. On May 27, 1865, Union troops arrived in Tallahassee, Florida, effectively ending the Civil War in the state. Confederate forces had surrendered earlier in the month, but it wasn't until Union troops arrived that the occupation of the city was complete.

4. On May 27, 1901, the Great Fire of Jacksonville began. The fire, which started from a discarded cigar in the LaVilla district, quickly spread and destroyed over 2,300 buildings, leaving over 10,000 people homeless. It was one of the largest urban fires in U.S. history.

5. On May 27, 1965, NASA astronaut Edward White became the first American to conduct a spacewalk during the Gemini 4 mission. White spent nearly 23 minutes outside the spacecraft, floating freely in space while tethered to the vehicle.
