1. In 1798, Kentucky became the first state in the United States to abolish imprisonment for debt. This landmark legislation eliminated debtor’s prisons and helped pave the way for more humane treatment of those who fell into financial trouble.

2. On November 13, 1862, Confederate General Braxton Bragg launched a surprise attack on Union forces at the Battle of Campbellsville. Despite initial success, the Confederate advance was eventually repulsed and Bragg was forced to retreat.

3. In 1893, Kentucky State University was founded in Frankfort, becoming the second historically black college in the state. Over the years, the university has played a key role in advancing the education and opportunities of African Americans in Kentucky.

4. On November 13, 1936, the “Life Begins at 40” radio show debuted on WLAP in Lexington. Hosted by Frank Graham, the show featured interviews with famous personalities and discussions of current issues. It proved to be a popular program and remained on the air for several years.

5. In 1983, Democratic governor Martha Layne Collins won re-election, becoming the first woman in Kentucky's history to win a second term as governor. During her tenure, she worked to improve education and promote economic development, earning her widespread praise and admiration.
