3. In 1939, the first basketball game was played in Allen Fieldhouse at the University of Kansas. The Jayhawks defeated Grinnell College 59-36.
4. In 1953, the United States Air Force established a missile field in western Kansas that would eventually become part of the Strategic Air Command's nuclear deterrent force.
5. In 2012, a massive explosion destroyed several buildings in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The explosion was caused by a gas leak and resulted in one fatality and 15 injuries.
