1. In 1975, the Newport Bridge was officially opened. The bridge, also known as the Claiborne Pell Bridge, spans over the Narragansett Bay and connects Newport and Jamestown. It was the longest suspension bridge in New England at the time of its opening.

2. In 1779, during the American Revolution, the British navy conducted a raid on Tiverton, Rhode Island. The British soldiers burned several homes and captured livestock before sailing back to their ships.

3. In 1950, the famous American artist Edward Hopper painted his famous work, "Hotel Lobby," while staying at the Viking Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island. The painting now resides at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.

4. In 1939, the historic Warwick City Hall was dedicated. The building was designed by renowned architect John Russell Pope, who also designed the Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C.

5. In 1913, the Providence Steam Roller football team played their first game at the Dexter Training Grounds in Providence. The team went on to win the 1928 NFL championship, becoming the only Rhode Island-based team to win a national championship in any major professional sport.
