2. On September 28, 1955, the U.S. Navy launched the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus, from the shipyard in Groton, Connecticut. The Nautilus went on to make history by completing the first underwater voyage to the North Pole in 1958.

3. In 1961, Alaska Airlines Flight 779 disappeared while flying from Ontario, Oregon to Anchorage, Alaska. Despite an extensive search, no trace of the plane or its 17 passengers and crew was ever found.

4. On September 28, 1989, Alaska officially became the 49th state to ban smoking in public places. The law was passed in response to growing concerns about the health risks of secondhand smoke.

5. In 2004, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, triggering a tsunami that caused minor damage along the coast. No fatalities were reported, but the quake was the largest to hit the region in over a decade.
