1. On September 29, 2008, the Anchorage Daily News reported that a new study had determined that Alaska's melting glaciers were contributing more water to the ocean than previously estimated. The study, by scientists at the University of Alaska Southeast, found that Alaska's glaciers were losing 75 billion tons of ice per year, adding about one-fifth of an inch to global sea levels annually.

2. On September 29, 1911, Alaska became the first U.S. territory to grant women the right to vote. The law passed by the territorial legislature granted women the right to vote in all elections, not just school board elections as in some states.

3. On September 29, 1969, the North Slope Borough was established as a home-rule unit of local government in Alaska. The North Slope Borough encompasses over 94,000 square miles and is the largest county-level political subdivision in the United States.

Calista Corporation was established to receive and manage the settlement funds and land conveyed under ANCSA for the benefit of the approximately 13,000 shareholders of the corporation, who are primarily Yup'ik, Cup'ik, and Athabascan people.

5. On September 29, 2006, the National Park Service opened a new visitor center at Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska. The new center, which replaced an aging facility, features exhibits on the park's wildlife, geology, and climbing history, as well as a 200-seat theater and an Alaska Geographic store.
